Towards 'A FAIR-enabling Citation Model for Cultural Heritage Objects'

 

 

Data citation can be considered as one of the pillars of Open Science. In the case of cultural heritage objects and data, which are inherently cross-disciplinary by provenance domain (GLAM) and research (Heritage Science and Digital Humanities), the delineation of the data citation methodology can act as a critical FAIR-enabling factor in terms of identification, discoverability, attribution, and accreditation, fostering cross-disciplinary information integration, also with reference to the actual constitution of the European Open Science Cloud.

From this perspective, the ongoing project “A FAIR-enabling citation model for Cultural Heritage Objects” has been conceived to design a sustainable, robust, and FAIR-enabled cross-domain citation model with the primary aim of demonstrating the multidimensionality of the citation property of the cultural heritage object (CHO). Funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and based on evaluations by external, independent experts, the project is supported by EOSC Future through the Research Data Alliance Open Call for cross-disciplinary science adoption grants. 

Five macro-activities, articulated into three distinct but closely related main phases, focusing on CHO representation, CHO citation identification, and CHO citation FAIRness assessment, have been performed by crafting specific case studies. Following a description of the primary actions undertaken by the project, we will present and share the methodology, results, and lessons learned along with ongoing developments.
